Gracing the purple pages of an electronic Issu PDF are the literary and artistic works of high school students at ASW. First toyed around with in late 2018, the first official Literary Magazine in over a decade at the American School of Warsaw has come to stay, thanks to the work of several 10th- and 11th-grade students.
The contents of this environmentally friendly magazine can be described as the best of what the high school body has to offer in terms of creative pieces. Different forms of media become intertwined as photographs accompany texts, and quietly take over the pages as the magazine is progressed through.
As this is a relatively new club, many works had to be solicited thorough students asking other students to lend their pieces to the creation of this issue. Ola N, a club member commented, “first we got submissions from students, with an option to stay anonymous, through a dropbox submission form. we also asked for works from different arts departments, like visual arts, photography etc. Then we organized it and formatted it, then uploaded a PDF of our file on Issuu.”
As this magazine is still in its infancy, Michaela L took inspiration from past projects she worked on when creating this issue. “ I had a pretty good idea of a general format of the newspaper [magazine], particularly the arrangement of images and text. I worked on a literature magazine at my old school. With this magazine, we did not have the time or resources to create as in depth layout as I had imagined, but the students working on it were able to create a beautiful magazine of students’ writing and artwork.”
However, looking towards the future, she hopes to expand, “I think that our current magazine contains all the sections we were looking to include, as it tries to celebrate students’ writing and art. In the future, hopefully we will be able to show more types of art and writing with a greater capacity to publish more work. I also hope to be able to experiment with more types of layouts now that we fully understand the work that creating the magazine will require.”
This magazine will soon be accessible through the Warrior News website, so check in often to see what your fellow classmates are able to craft with the click of a button, keyboard, or brushstroke!
